Best Time for Birdwatching:

Spring (April–June) – Migratory birds return, and wetlands are lively.

Autumn (September–October) – Birds prepare for migration, offering spectacular views.

3-Day Hulunbuir Birding Itinerary

Day 1: Hailar - Erguna Wetland- Genhe

Morning: Depart from Hailar and drive to Erguna Wetland (2hours drive), one of the best birdwatching sites in Hulunbuir.

Walk along the boardwalk to observe red-crowned cranes, swans, herons, and wild ducks. Use binoculars at observation points for better views of migratory birds.

Lunch: Enjoy a local meal in Erguna, featuring fresh wild mushrooms and beef.

Afternoon: Head to Genhe (2hours drive), a forested area with diverse bird species.Stop at forested wetlands to look for woodpeckers, warblers, and thrushes.

Evening: Stay overnight in Genhe and enjoy a peaceful night in nature.

Day 2: Genhe -Aoluguya Reindeer Village - Heishantou Grassland

Early Morning: Go on a forest birdwatching walk in Genhe, home to owls, grouse, and Siberian blue robins. Visit Aoluguya Reindeer Village and learn about the Ewenki Reindeer Tribe. Spot forest-dwelling birds such as crossbills, finches, and treecreepers.

Lunch: Enjoy northern-style cuisine with wild vegetables and fresh game meat.

Afternoon: Travel to Heishantou Grassland (2.5hours drive), stopping along the way for steppe eagles, harriers, and larks.

Evening: Stay in Heishantou, where you may hear nightjars and owls at dusk.

Day 3: Heishantou -Hulun Lake -Hailar

Morning: Explore the grassland bird habitats of Heishantou, where you can spot cranes, kestrels, and falcons. Head to Hulun Lake (4hours drive), one of China’s largest freshwater lakes and a key birdwatching site. Observe whooper swans, gulls, geese, and cormorants. If you interesting, you can take a boat tour for closer views of waterfowl.

Afternoon: Drive back to Hailar, with a final stop at wetland or grassland observation points for last birdwatching opportunities.

4 Days Hulunbuir Birding Itinerary

Day 1: Hailar

Morning: Arrive and drive to Hailar National Forest Park (about a 30-minute drive). Walk along the boardwalk to observe forest birds such as warblers and woodpeckers. Focus on capturing white-naped cranes or whooper swans near the wetland edges.

Afternoon: Drive to Huihe Wetland (about 1 hour). Use binoculars to observe migratory bird flocks, including the oriental white stork and red-crowned crane during migration season. Common bird species include Swan Geese, Greylag Geese, Eastern Marsh Harriers, Grey Herons, and Cormorants. You may even spot rare species such as the Eurasian Spoonbill and Steppe Eagle. In the evening, enjoy sunset photography from the wetland observation deck.

Day 2: Hailar -Erguna

Morning: Travel to Erguna City (about a 2-hour drive) and head into the nearby forests to photograph the great grey owl. This rare bird inhabits old-growth coniferous and mixed forests, preferring open clearings and logged areas.The great grey owl is mainly found in Northern Europe, North Asia, and North America, making it a rare species in China.

Evening: Stay overnight in Erguna, a northern town with Russian-style architecture.

Day 3: Erguna -Deep Birdwatching in the Genhe Area

Morning: Explore the hidden wetlands along the Genhe Airport Road, searching for rare birds such as the black stork and white-naped crane. (Advance arrangements with a local guide are recommended to confirm recent bird sightings.)

Afternoon: Drive back toward Hailar, making stops along the way to capture any missed bird species.

Day 4: Hailar

Morning: Visit Taiyang Island National Wetland Park, an excellent site for observing waterfowl such as the Baer’s pochard (red-headed diving duck).

Afternoon: Wrap up your four-day birdwatching adventure and depart from Hulunbuir, taking with your unforgettable memories of its diverse birdlife and stunning landscapes.

5 Days Hulunbuir Birding Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Hulun Lake National Wetland Park

Arrival in Hulunbuir and check-in at a hotel, Visit the Hulun Lake National Wetland Park, one of the largest wetlands in Asia and home to many species of migratory birds, Look for species such as Swan Geese, Ruddy Shelducks, and Little Terns.

Day 2: Wulagan Grasslands & Wetlands

Drive to the Wulagan Grasslands and spend the day exploring the grasslands and wetlands, Look for species such as Relict Gulls, Black-necked Cranes, and Mongolian Larks.

Day 3: Xingan Mountains – Forest & River Birding

Visit the Xingan Mountains and explore the mixed forests and river valleys, Look for species such as Mandarin Ducks, Black Storks, and Ussurian Pearls.

Day 4: Nenjiang River & Wetlands

Drive to the Nenjiang River and spend the day birding along the river and its wetlands, Look for species such as Tundra Swans, Bean Geese, and Hooded Cranes.

Day 5: Departure from Hulunbuir

Depending on departure time, enjoy a final morning birdwatching session before heading to the airport or train station.
