Urumqi (Wulumuqi in Chinese pinyin) is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The name is translated as “beautiful pasture.” With a population of over 2.33 million, Urumqi, is the largest city in the western region of China, with an area of more than 10,000 square kilometers. It is also about 2,500 kilometers away from the nearest coastline and is the most remote city nearby water in the world.
As a relatively young city, Urumqi, is located on the northern side of the Tianshan Mountain range and was founded in 1763. As an important section of the ancient Silk Road, Urumqi has been an active participant of expressing cultural elements. There are about 45 ethnic groups living in Urumqi, adding to the cultural fabric of the city. One can compare the different ways of living among diverse ethnic groups by exploring the old streets in the city.
There are many tourist areas in Urumqi. The most famous are the Islamic International Grand Bazaar, Hongshan Mountain, No.1 Glacier, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, Xinjiang Silk Road Museum, and Shuimugou Hot Springs, and so on.
