Xining Travel Guide, How to Plan a Trip to Xining
Xining, historically known as Huangzhong and also referred to as Xiadu (Summer City), is the capital of Qinghai Province and serves as the political, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, transportation, and communication center of the province.
Located in the northwest region of China, in eastern Qinghai Province, and within the Huangshui River valley basin, Xining is the eastern gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is a crucial passage along the southern route of the ancient Silk Road and the Tang-Tubo Ancient Road. As a key transportation hub and strategic military location in northwest China, it has long been known as the "Key to the West Sea (Qinghai Lake)" and the "Throat of Qinghai and Tibet." It is also one of the world's high-altitude cities.
With a rich historical and cultural heritage, unique natural resources, and vibrant ethnic customs, Xining is a dazzling pearl on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
History and Culture

Xining is an ancient city with a history of over 2,100 years. Long before the Qin and Han dynasties, this area was known as the land of the Qiang and Rong peoples. In 121 BC, as the Han army advanced westward into the Huangshui River basin, General Huo Qubing established a military stronghold called Xiping Pavilion, marking the beginning of Xining’s administrative history. In 1104 AD, it was renamed Xining Prefecture, and from that point, the name "Xining" officially appeared in historical records. In 1929, when Qinghai Province was established, Xining was designated as its capital. On September 5, 1949, Xining was liberated, ushering in a new era in its history.
Located at the junction of the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xining is a multi-ethnic city with a diverse population. Its cultural and artistic development is rich in both ethnic and regional characteristics. The city is home to six major ethnic groups—Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian, Tu, and Salar—living together in harmony. This inclusiveness has fostered a brilliant and diverse religious culture, while the fusion of multiple ethnic traditions has given rise to Xining’s unique and fascinating culinary culture.
Attractions in Xining

For many travelers, Xining serves as a transportation hub en route to Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Monastery), Qinghai Lake, or Tibet via the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. After gradually acclimating to the western plateau, they set off toward Lhasa. However, Xining itself has places worth exploring. Kumbum Monastery, Dongguan Mosque, Beichan Temple, and Nanchan Temple—these religious sites are scattered throughout the city and its surroundings, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural fusion of different ethnic groups. You can also take a stroll to Nanshan Park for a panoramic view of Xining’s nightscape, visit the museums to trace the city's historical development, or bring your children to the wildlife park for an encounter with snow leopards and Tibetan foxes.
Best Things to Enjoy
Watch the sunrise by Qinghai Lake and capture the flocks of birds in your lens; climb Riyue Mountain to witness its two distinct landscapes; observe a Jum'a prayer at Dongguan Mosque; and, like the locals, embrace nature with a joyful "langshan" outing...Xining is far more than just a fleeting stop on your journey. This gem of the plateau holds countless reasons for you to linger. From bustling commercial districts to natural wonders, from historical relics to authentic local cuisine, Xining awaits your careful exploration and savoring.
Delicious Food and Snacks

Food is Xining’s welcoming gift, especially in the dry and chilly winter winds of the plateau. Every meal is not just about filling the stomach but also a reflection of the love and respect for life shared by every resident of this ancient highland city.
The sizzling and spicy Kang-Pot lamb ribs, the tender and flavorful hand-grasped mutton, the rich and creamy yogurt, and the smooth and chewy Rang Pi—Xining’s cuisine embodies both the bold and hearty flavors of Northwestern China and the unique culinary traditions of ethnic minorities. Every bite allows you to taste the warmth and inclusiveness of this vibrant city.
