Macau top cultural activities and outdoor adventures
Hands-on activities in a Macau
Macau offers a range of hands-on activities, from incense-making and hand-painted Portuguese tile workshops to Portuguese egg tart baking, rickshaw rides, and exploring the city’s historic landmarks.
These hands-on activities will help you experience the unique culture and lifestyle of Macau while having fun and creating unforgettable memories.
Hands-On Incense-Making Class
- Type: Cultural Immersion/ Expedition/ Nature
- Duration: 2.5 Hours
Incense culture in China has a long and rich history, dating back to before the Spring and Autumn Period and reaching its peak during the Song Dynasty. In modern times, incense products have become increasingly diverse and have gradually become part of everyday life.
Macau was once known for its incense-making industry, one of its three major traditional handicrafts. Today, several venues offer hands-on incense-making experiences, including stick incense, incense tablets, and seal incense. Wing Lei Paper Materials operates a handmade stick incense workshop and requires advance booking, while H853 Fun Factory regularly hosts themed workshops such as incense rolling, incense cakes, and stick incense making, suitable for different age groups.
Although incense-making may appear simple, it embodies ancient wisdom and elements of traditional Chinese medicine, as different ingredients are selected according to individual body conditions. During the experience, instructors introduce the tools and materials used, such as aromatic ingredients, natural binders, and molds, while explaining the characteristics and benefits of different fragrances. You are then guided step by step through blending scents and shaping your own incense.
The entire experience usually lasts around 2.5 hours. At the end, you can take their handmade incense home as a souvenir. These pieces are not only handicrafts, but also a reminder of the experience.
Macau Portuguese Tile Painting Experience
- Type: Art & Architecture
- Duration: 2-3 Hours
Portuguese-style ceramic tile art, known for its distinctive exotic patterns, is a unique form of intangible cultural heritage in Macau. It reflects the city’s rich history as a crossroads of cultural exchange and stands out as a highlight of Lingnan artistic aesthetics. The process is intricate and time-honored, involving shaping raw clay, an initial biscuit firing, applying a glaze base, hand-painting detailed patterns, and finally a second high-temperature firing at around 1,100°C for about eight hours.
You can experience this traditional craft at workshops such as the intangible cultural heritage workshop near the Ruins of St. Paul's or the Shang Yi Workshop’s hand-painted Portuguese tile sessions. These experiences guide you through the full process, from clay shaping and underglaze painting to high-temperature firing, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of this unique cultural art form while creating your own piece to take home.
Portuguese Egg Tart – Macau’s Signature Dessert
- Type: Cultural Immersion/ Food
- Duration: 2 hours
The Portuguese egg tart is Macau’s iconic dessert, originally from Portugal and introduced to Macau centuries ago. Known for its flaky buttery crust, rich and creamy custard filling, and caramelized crispy top, it has become a symbol of the fusion between Portuguese and Chinese culinary traditions in Macau.
You can join a baking workshop to make this famous tart yourself. Under the guidance of a pastry chef, you will go through the key steps of preparing the flaky pastry, mixing the smooth and sweet custard, and baking the tarts until they achieve their signature golden, crispy top. The process is fun and interactive, giving you a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship behind this beloved dessert. At the end, you can enjoy your freshly baked tarts or take them home as a delicious souvenir.
For food lovers, this is an unmissable and enjoyable experience. (Workshops are held at selected venues and usually require advance booking.)

Rickshaw Experience
- Type: Cultural Immersion/ sightseeing
- Duration: 1-2 hours
The rickshaw is one of Macau’s most distinctive modes of transportation and also a charming way to explore the city. Riding a rickshaw through the Nam Van and Sai Van areas, you can enjoy gentle breezes and scenic streets, creating a relaxing experience that feels far removed from the bustle of the city.
The rickshaw has its origins in mid-19th century Japan, where the hand-pulled “jinrikisha” (also called handcar or rickshaw) first appeared. It was introduced to Shanghai’s foreign concessions in 1874 and quickly spread to other Chinese cities as well as Hong Kong and Macau. The version that arrived in Macau in 1948 was a hybrid of the traditional bicycle and hand-pulled rickshaw. It was designed to reduce the physical strain on the puller, making it easier to pedal while still offering a smooth ride, marking the height of its practical use. Over time, with changes in urban transport, the rickshaw gradually transformed into a popular tourist experience.
Today, legally operating rickshaw stations in Macau are located in three main areas on the Macau Peninsula: outside Lisboa Hotel, outside Grand Lisboa Hotel, and outside the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.
