5 Days Ningxia Family Trip Itinerary with Kids

Day 1: Arrive in Yinchuan and Explore the City

Arrive in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Visit Ningxia Museum to learn about the history of the Western Xia Kingdom and Hui culture through interactive exhibitions suitable for children. Later, stroll around the historic Yinchuan Drum Tower and nearby pedestrian streets.

In the evening, enjoy local snacks and a lively atmosphere at Huaiyuan Night Market.

Day 2: Western Xia Culture and Desert Fun

In the morning, visit the famous Western Xia Imperial Tombs, where families can explore the mysterious ancient tombs and museum exhibitions. Kids can experience Western Xia calligraphy by learning about the structure and strokes of the ancient script, as well as traditional techniques such as brush handling, writing, signatures, and seal stamping under the guidance of professional instructors. This hands-on activity offers a fun and educational way to discover the lost civilization of the Western Xia Kingdom.

Afterwards, head to Zhenbeipu Western Film Studio, a fun filming location filled with movie sets, folk performances, and interactive activities suitable for families and children.

Day 3: Shapotou Desert Adventure in Zhongwei

Travel to Zhongwei and spend the day at Shapotou, one of Ningxia’s most famous attractions. Families can enjoy camel riding, sand sliding, desert off road vehicles, and Yellow River activities such as rafting on traditional sheepskin rafts.

In the evening, experience desert camping and stargazing under the clear skies of the Tengger Desert, a memorable adventure for children.

Day 4: Wetlands and Wildlife at Shahu Lake

Return to Shizuishan and visit Shahu Lake, a beautiful scenic area combining wetlands, lakes, reeds, birds, and desert landscapes. Day 4: Yellow River Culture and Hui Heritage

Travel to Wuzhong (approximately 1 hour by car from Yinchuan). Continue to the Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon (about 30 minutes by car from Wuzhong), where you can admire the magnificent scenery of the Yellow River. Afterwards, visit China Hui Culture Park to gain deeper insight into Hui traditions, Islamic architecture, and local customs before returning to Yinchuan for the evening.

Day 5: Wetland Leisure and Departure

5 Days Ningxia Adventure Itinerary for Young Travelers

Day 1: Explore Yinchuan City

Arrive in Yinchuan, check in to your hotel, and take a short rest. Visit the Drum Tower and stroll along Gulou South Street, where historic alleyways, local shops, and mosques reflect Yinchuan's unique blend of Han, Hui, and Silk Road cultures.

End the day with a local dinner featuring Ningxia specialties, including lamb dishes and Eight Treasures Tea.

Day 2: Yinchuan to Zhongwei – Shapotou Desert Adventure

Travel to Zhongwei and spend the day at Shapotou Scenic Area. Experience exciting desert activities such as sand sliding down towering dunes, camel riding, and rafting across the Yellow River on traditional sheepskin rafts.

Day 3: Zhongwei to Liupan Mountain National Forest Park

Drive approximately 3.5 hours to Liupan Mountain National Forest Park. In the afternoon, hike through the Laolongtan Gorge Scenic Area, known for its crystal-clear streams, cascading waterfalls, and well-preserved forests.

Enjoy the refreshing mountain climate and beautiful natural scenery, offering a complete contrast to the desert landscapes of the previous day.

Day 4: Red Army Trail and Huoshizhai Geopark

In the morning, hike a section of the historic Red Army Trail in the Liupan Mountains and learn about the area's important role in China's revolutionary history.

Later, travel to Huoshizhai National Geopark (approximately 2 hours). Follow the scenic circular trail of about 7 km, passing dramatic red sandstone peaks, narrow valleys, and cliffside boardwalks. The striking Danxia landforms make this one of Ningxia's most impressive hiking destinations. Stay overnight in Guyuan.

Day 5: Return to Yinchuan and Visit the Western Xia Imperial Tombs

Return to Yinchuan and explore the wineries along the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains. Tour the vineyards, learn about Ningxia's world-renowned wine industry, and enjoy wine tasting with spectacular mountain views before departing Ningxia.

Day 1: Discover Historical in Yinchuan

Day 4: Silk Road Heritage in Guyuan

Visit the Guyuan Museum and continue to the Xumishan Grottoes (approximately 1 hour by car from Guyuan city center), one of the largest Buddhist grotto complexes in northwestern China, showcasing centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road. Stay overnight in Guyuan.

Day 5: Ancient Great Wall and Cultural Legacy

Visit the Qin Great Wall Ruins (approximately 1 hour by car from Guyuan city center), one of the oldest sections of the Great Wall in China. Afterwards, return to Yinchuan (approximately 3 to 4 hours by car or 2.5 to 3 hours by high-speed rail) and conclude your cultural immersion journey in Ningxia.
