Chongqing Travel Itinerary, Plan a Trip in Chongqing
Chongqing is located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. The city center is embraced by the two rivers, bordered by water on three sides and backed by mountains on the fourth, forming a peninsula-like shape. With its mountainous terrain and layered buildings built along the slopes, Chongqing has earned the nickname "Mountain City".
Chongqing is not only the world's largest mountainous and riverine city, but also a famous historical and cultural city in China, as well as a renowned "City of Hot Springs" both in China and worldwide, boasts stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

2-day Chongqing Itinerary

It is recommended to plan a two-day itinerary centered around Chongqing's Yuzhong Peninsula and major nearby attractions such as the Dazu Rock Carvings and Ciqikou Ancient Town.
Day 1: Arrive in Chongqing and check into your hotel, then visit the Hongya Cave, a historic shopping and dining area with a traditional feel. Take a night cruise on the Yangtze River for views of the city's famous skyline. Enjoy a hot pot dinner, a local specialty in Chongqing.
Day 2: Visit the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its ancient Buddhist sculptures. Then return to the central area, explore the Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, a bustling shopping district with modern stores and local vendors.
3-day Chongqing Itinerary

If you have three days, you can choose to spend two days in Chongqing’s main urban area, and use the remaining day to visit surrounding attractions such as the Dazu Rock Carvings, Wulong Three Natural Bridges, or Fengdu Ghost City.
Day 1: Arrive in Chongqing and check into your hotel, then head to Chaotianmen, take the Yangtze River Cableway to admire the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers. Day 2: Take a day trip to the Wulong Karst National Geology Park, a unique geological wonder known for its towering peaks, caves, and dramatic landscapes, Visit the Tiankeng Dongling, the world's largest sinkhole, and explore the surrounding karst formations, Hike through the lush, scenic countryside and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Day 3: Take a scenic cable car ride up to the Eling Park, a scenic park that offers breathtaking views of the city and the Yangtze River. Visit the Chongqing Zoo, which houses a wide variety of animals including pandas, monkeys, and tigers.
4-day Chongqing Itinerary
As an internet-famous city, Chongqing boasts incredibly rich tourism resources—four days there would only scratch the surface. To explore Chongqing thoroughly without regrets, places like Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street, the Eighteen Stairs Area, and the Three Gorges Museum are excellent spots to experience the city in depth.
5-day Chongqing Itinerary

If you have ample time, you'll have more opportunities to immerse yourself in Chongqing's natural landscapes and cultural atmosphere. Typically, most tourists visiting Chongqing will set aside at least a full day—or even more—to explore the Wulong Karst Tourist Area. The stunning scenery of Three Natural Bridges, Fairy Mountain, and the Furong River is truly captivating. This route can also be extended to include the picturesque Wu River Gallery and Chiyou Jiuli City in Pengshui.
7-day Chongqing Itinerary
With a full week, even the most discerning traveler can be fully satisfied when visiting Chongqing. You can venture farther to Fengjie and Wushan to explore the stunning landscapes of the Three Gorges, or head to Pengshui and Youyang to experience the unique charm of ethnic minority cultures. Of course, the secrets of Chongqing's main urban area are nearly endless—whether it's mountain city trails, underground cave adventures, high-altitude swings, or creative cultural parks, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
10-day Chongqing Itinerary

A Chongqing itinerary is not limited to just Chongqing and the Three Gorges—it can also extend to Chengdu in Sichuan. As another city located in the Sichuan Basin, the "Land of Abundance" Chengdu is equally captivating and worth exploring. Additionally, since the Yangtze River runs through Chongqing, taking a cruise downstream along the river is also an excellent travel option.

14-day Chongqing Itinerary
A two-week journey offers a fulfilling experience whether you're exploring Chongqing or Chengdu. You can also extend your trip from Wushan to Hubei, from Wulong to Guizhou, or from Youyang to Hunan. You could even take a cruise from Chaotianmen along the Yangtze River all the way to Shanghai.
