Xishuangbanna is located in the southern part of Yunnan Province, adjacent to Pu'er City and bordering Laos and Myanmar. The capital city is Jinghong, and Xishuangbanna has a total area of 19,124.5 square kilometers. It has a permanent resident population of 1.333 million, with 790,300 belonging to various ethnic minorities.

Xishuangbanna has a tropical monsoon climate and is renowned for its rich tropical forests and wild elephants, earning it the titles of the 'Plant Kingdom' and 'Animal Kingdom.' In 1570, Xuanweishi Zhao Yingmeng divided the region into 12 "bannas." The name "Xishuangbanna" comes from the Dai language, where "Xishuang" means twelve and "banna" refers to a feudal administrative unit (literally translated as "twelve thousand rice fields"), indicating twelve administrative regions.

In the Dai language, Xishuangbanna means "an ideal and magical paradise." Xishuangbanna is a popular tourist destination both domestically and internationally, famous for its enchanting tropical rainforest landscapes and ethnic diversity. The region is home to 13 ethnic minorities, with the Dai ethnic group being the largest. Their unique customs and festivals, such as the famous Water Splashing Festival, as well as the ancient Pu-erh tea trees, it showcases China as the birthplace of tea. Additionally, The Bai Ye Sutras have a history of over 2,500 years and are often referred to as the "Treasures of Buddhism" due to their rarity, and over 500 Buddhist temples in Xishuangbanna.
