Ordos is a city known for its coal industry and cashmere products, as well as its rich history and cultural heritage. Popular tourist attractions include the Genghis Khan Mausoleum, the Ordos Museum, the Xiangshawan Desert, and many others. Visitors can also enjoy local cuisine, traditional music and dance performances, and a variety of outdoor activities such as horseback riding and sandboarding in the desert.

Top 1: Mausoleum of Genghis Khan

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, originally known as the Eight White Yurts, is a cultural and historical attraction that commemorates the life and legacy of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire. It serves as a sacred site where Mongolians honor the spirit of Genghis Khan, not his actual burial place. After his death, his body was secretly interred, and the exact location remains unknown to this day.

The mausoleum dates back to 1227 and stands as an important symbol of Mongolian history and culture. The entire complex resembles a giant traditional yurt, blending harmoniously with the vast grasslands and showcasing the unique architectural style of the Mongolian people. Inside, visitors will find portraits, ceremonial items, and cultural relics dedicated to Genghis Khan, while the towering central structure serves as the site’s iconic landmark.

Each year, on the lunar dates March 21, May 15, August 12, and October 3, grand sacrificial ceremonies are held here. These events attract visitors from across China and around the world, who come to pay tribute and remember the great leader who shaped the course of Eurasian history.

One of its most remarkable highlights is Xiangshawan, a desert area located about 50 kilometers from Ordos. It is a natural wonder famous for its magical “singing sands,” where the dunes produce a deep humming sound as you slide across them. The area offers unique desert scenery and a wide range of outdoor activities, including off-road desert driving, sandboarding, camel riding, and watching breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Visitors can experience the mysterious phenomenon of the singing sands and explore the timeless charm of Xiangshawan, a place shaped by nature over centuries.

The desert’s eastern and central areas receive more rainfall and feature seasonal channels that create scattered fertile oases with mild microclimates. In contrast, the western region is much drier, with almost no surface water except the Sharimorin River, which disappears into the sands. At the desert’s western and northern edges, groundwater influenced by the Yellow River provides better water conditions within the irrigation zone.
