Shangri-La, located in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, is a county-level city in northwest Yunnan, Shangri-La is located at the junction of the three provinces and regions of Yunnan , Sichuan , and Tibet, and it is an important site on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Shangri-La covers an area of approximately 11,600 square kilometers and has a population of about 186,400 people, with nearly 80% of the population being Tibetan. This creates a diverse, multicultural community.

Shangri-La boasts a rich Tibetan history and stunning natural scenery, with attractions such as Pudacuo National Park, Dukezong Ancient Town, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, and Tiger Leaping Gorge etc.

The Tibetan name "Shangri-La" means "Sun and Moon in the Heart." Shangri-La City, formerly known as Zhongdian County, is called "Jiantang" in Tibetan.

In 1933, Shangri-La was depicted as an eternally peaceful and tranquil place by British author James Hilton.

Due to its location at the intersection of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, and with a history of over 1,300 years, Shangri-La is rich in Tibetan culture. This includes traditional festivals, music and dance, ethnic clothing, and a diverse culinary culture.

The local people engage in various traditional dances such as the Guozhuang and Tibetan dances of Dazhongdian, the Hulusheng dance of the Yi, and the Dui Jiao dance of the Lisu. Within the region, there are also seven distinct types of Tibetan attire.

Where is the best and must-see natural views in Shangri-La? Songzanlin Monastery: is the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province, founded in the 17th century by the Fifth Dalai Lama, and is also hailed as 'the Little Potala Palace.' Songzanlin Monastery is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,300 meters, built into the mountainside with traditional Tibetan-style architecture. The structure is made of wood and earth, resembling an ancient fortress. The monastery is home to over 700 monks and hosts many eligious ceremonies each year. At the lake in front of Songzanlin, you can enjoy the beautiful reflections in the water, experience religious culture, and appreciate the natural scenery.

Pudacuo National Park: is a nature reserve that combines lakes, forests, and meadows. On the vast grasslands, with clear blue lakes and lush green forests. Here, you can witness the most exquisite beauty of nature, as if a fairyland has fallen to earth.

Napahai Nature Reserve: Napahai means “Behind the forest lies a highland lake”, a prairie lake with crystal-clear water, just like a mirror of the sky, Surrounding the lake is a beautiful grassland.

Tiger Leaping Gorge: Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in China. It is renowned for its dramatic and rugged scenery. After the river flows into the gorge, it narrows to just over 50 meters at its narrowest point, where a tiger or leopard could leap across, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Meili Snow Mountains: The main peak, Kawagebo, reaches an elevation of 6,740 meters and is the highest peak in Yunnan. The Meili Snow Mountains are one of the four sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism. "The best time to view Meili Snow Mountain is from October to April."

Baishuitai (White Water Terraces): A beautiful natural limestone terrace formed by mineral-rich hot springs water. Its layered white limestone steps glisten uniquely in the sunlight, resembling silver staircases that showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship of nature.

Local Food and Snacks

Shangri-La's cuisine features a delightful array of local specialties, including savory Tibetan dishes like yak meat and hearty barley cakes, yak hot pot, Butter-Fried Matsutake. The region is also known for its unique snacks, such as Tibetan butter tea and traditional Tibetan-style snacks that offer a taste of its rich cultural heritage.

Yak hot pot(牦牛火锅)locally-produced yak meat is tender and flavorful, available in options like clear broth, spicy. It is rich in nutrients and provides warming and invigorating benefits, making it especially suitable for nourishment during the cold winter.

Buttered Tea (酥油茶) Butter tea is a traditional Tibetan beverage made with tea, yak butter, and salt, known for its rich, creamy texture and warming properties.

Highland barley wine (青稞酒) Brewed from highland barley, barley wine has been one of the main drinks in Tibetan areas for thousands of years. It is the favorite beverage of the Tibetan people and is essential for celebrating festivals and joyful events.

Activities to Experience in Shangri-La

Zhuanshan Festival in the Yubeng Village where you can witness breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the snow-capped mountains. Every April, the Zhuanshan Festival is held in Yubeng Village, which is on the inner pilgrimage route. Yubeng Village is part of a classic, entry-level trekking path where people join Tibetan pilgrims in worship.

Horse Racing Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the festival is very lively, featuring traditional equestrian competitions, as well as yak races, ox-pulling contests, and various other activities.

Gedong Festival The 15th day of the seventh lunar month, also known as the Tiao Shen Festival, is when locals dress in their finest and gather to perform collective rituals to honor the mountain gods. Temples hold grand ceremonies to drive away evil spirits and pray for a bountiful harvest and peace in the coming year.

Torch Festival It is celebrated on the 24th or 25th day of the sixth month of the Yi calendar, the Yi people celebrate the festival to eradicate insect swarms and celebrate a good harvest, they wear festival suits, play Yu-kin musical instruments and the great three-stringed instrument to participate in Torch Festival.
