Lhasa sits on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and is the capital of Tibet, as well as one of the most representative cities of this vast highland. It is not only Tibet's political, economic, and cultural center, but also an important sacred site of Tibetan Buddhism, attracting countless pilgrims and travelers over the years.

As a plateau city, Lhasa was once relatively isolated from the outside world. Over time, however, it has gradually become known to the wider world. Owing to its unique geographical setting and rich cultural heritage, Lhasa has developed a character distinct from other regions of China, revealing remarkable historical depth and cultural significance.

LhasaLhasa

The name "Lhasa" in English means "the Place of the Gods", a phrase that naturally sparks curiosity about its origins: how it rose from humble beginnings to become a sacred city, how its culture endured and overcame challenges through periods of struggle, and how it ultimately evolved into the magnificent city we see today.

While all itineraries are flexible, we've provided a recommended itinerary to help you. If you need a customized Lhasa itinerary, please contact us.

2-day Lhasa Itinerary

Lhasa ItineraryPotala Palace

If you only have two days in Lhasa, it is recommended to stay within the city and focus your time on its most iconic sights, such as the Potala Palace and Barkhor Street. Visit Jokhang Temple, sit for a while at the Guangming Gang Qiong Sweet Teahouse, or experience the unique power of a traditional Tibetan medicinal bath found only on the Snow Plateau.

Alternatively, you can check out several key monasteries on the outskirts of the city, such as Zashi Lhamo Monastery, known for prayers for wealth; Sera Monastery, famous for its large-scale monk debates; and Drepung Monastery, where the grand Buddha Unveiling Festival takes place in late June. If religious sites are not your main interest, you can also venture beyond the city to take in some of the renowned natural landscapes within 100 kilometers of Lhasa.

3-day or 4-day Lhasa Itinerary

Lhasa ItineraryYamdrok Lake

Generally, if you have a time budget of three days or more, there is no need to limit yourself to Lhasa alone—you can start linking destinations beyond the city into your itinerary. With 3–4 days, consider heading to the scenic Nyingchi region: the emerald waters of Basum Tso, the charming Lulang Town nestled amid forests and lakes, and the majestic, mysterious Mount Namjagbarwa all offer a particularly refreshing and uplifting experience. In addition, Shannan, the cradle of Tibetan culture, and Shigatse, home to the world's highest peaks, together showcase the diverse landscapes and styles that Tibet has to offer.

Day 1: Arrive in Lhasa, acclimatize and visit Potala Palace.

Day 2: Visit Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and Sera Monastery.

Day 3: Visit Drepung Monastery and Norbulingka Palace.

5-day Lhasa Itinerary

Lhasa ItineraryMount Everest

If you have a five-day time budget, it’s enough to embark on the Everest route that countless travelers dream of. Accompanied by the classic snow-capped peaks, glaciers, sacred lakes, and religious monasteries of the Shigatse region, you will slowly make your way to the awe-inspiring Everest Base Camp, where you can watch the sunrise, sunset, and the vast, star-filled Milky Way at night. If you are a lover of history and religion, the lesser-known yet profound Shannan circuit would be an even better choice.

Day 1-2: As above.

Day 3: Visit Ganden Monastery and Tsurphu Monastery.

Day 4: Visit Namtso Lake, one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world.

Day 5: Visit the Yumbulagang Palace, the first palace in Tibet, and the Tradruk Temple.

7-day Lhasa Itinerary

Lhasa ItineraryLhasa Train Travel

If you have more than seven days to explore Lhasa, consider spending some time experiencing local Tibetan life, or embarking on a road trip along National Highway G318. As the very heart of Tibet, Lhasa is a city well worth taking the time to savor and appreciate at a leisurely pace.

Day 1-3: As above.

Day 4: Visit the Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

Day 5: Visit the Pabonka Monastery, the most important meditation center in Tibet.

Day 6: Take a day trip to the holy mountain of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Mt. Kailash.

Day 7: Visit the Palcho Monastery and the Tashilhunpo Monastery.

It is worth noting that Tibet is an autonomous region of China, so if you are planning to travel there, you will need a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) to enter the region. Also, being at high altitude, Lhasa is known to cause altitude sickness in some people, so it is important to take necessary precautions and acclimatize properly.
